Battery Energy Storage in SPP

Southwest Power Pool (SPP) covers 14 states across the Great Plains and parts of the South, managing one of the windiest grids in North America. Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and the Dakotas are among the top wind-producing states in the US, and SPP's grid increasingly needs battery storage to absorb surplus wind generation and deliver it when it's needed.

Historically, SPP has lagged other ISOs in storage deployment due to lower electricity prices and less state policy support. But that is changing rapidly. Oklahoma and Kansas have growing renewable energy industries, transmission constraints are creating value for co-located storage, and the broader economics of LFP batteries have made SPP viable for merchant storage developers.

For BESS professionals, SPP represents a frontier market with lower competition and significant long-term growth potential. Wind-plus-storage hybrid projects are particularly active in the corridor from Kansas through Oklahoma and into the Texas panhandle, where ERCOT and SPP interconnect.
