Battery Energy Storage in MISO
The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) covers a vast 15-state footprint from Manitoba, Canada to Louisiana, serving over 45 million people across the Midwest, Mid-South, and parts of the Southeast. MISO is undergoing one of the most significant grid transformation programs in its history β retiring coal capacity at scale while integrating massive wind resources and an accelerating pipeline of solar and battery storage.
MISO's Long Range Transmission Planning (LRTP) program has identified hundreds of billions of dollars in needed transmission upgrades, and battery storage is increasingly being deployed to maximize the utilization of new and existing transmission infrastructure. The footprint's combination of low land costs, favorable interconnection economics in some zones, and growing state-level storage policies makes it an attractive development market.
BESS activity in MISO is concentrated in the Midwest β Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Minnesota β as well as in the South, where Louisiana and Mississippi have seen growing activity. The Illinois Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) has been a particularly significant driver of storage procurement.
