The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is the most active battery energy storage market in North America. Texas has deployed more utility-scale BESS capacity than any other state, driven by a deregulated market structure that rewards fast-responding resources, a robust ancillary services market, and some of the most attractive interconnection economics in the country.

ERCOT's energy-only market design — where prices can spike to $5,000/MWh during scarcity events — makes battery storage uniquely valuable. The 2021 Winter Storm Uri demonstrated both the grid's vulnerability and the critical role storage can play in resilience. Since then, ERCOT has deployed gigawatts of new battery capacity, with tens of gigawatts more in the interconnection queue.

For BESS professionals, ERCOT represents the epicenter of the US storage buildout. Texas-based roles span the full project lifecycle — from development and interconnection through EPC, commissioning, and long-term O&M — and are concentrated around Austin, Houston, and the West Texas transmission corridor.
