What Does a BESS Systems Engineer Do?

A BESS Systems Engineer is responsible for the technical design, integration, and optimization of battery energy storage systems — from component selection and system architecture through factory acceptance testing, site commissioning, and performance validation. They sit at the intersection of electrical engineering, battery technology, power electronics, and grid operations.

BESS Systems Engineers work closely with OEMs, EPC contractors, utilities, and project developers to ensure that battery, PCS, BMS, EMS, and balance-of-plant components are specified correctly and integrated seamlessly. They develop system design packages, interface control documents, and commissioning test procedures that define how the system will perform across its entire operational life.

As battery technology evolves rapidly — with LFP increasingly dominant at utility scale and new chemistries emerging — BESS Systems Engineers must maintain deep technical knowledge while also understanding the commercial and regulatory context in which these systems operate. This is one of the most technically demanding and well-compensated roles in the energy storage industry.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Develop BESS system architecture, single-line diagrams, and design basis documents
  • Specify battery packs, PCS (inverters), BMS, EMS/SCADA, and BOP equipment
  • Prepare interface control documents (ICDs) between system components
  • Lead factory acceptance testing (FAT) at battery and PCS vendor facilities
  • Develop site acceptance test (SAT) and commissioning test procedures
  • Perform system performance modeling and energy throughput analysis
  • Evaluate thermal management, safety systems, and fire suppression requirements per NFPA 855
  • Support interconnection studies — provide technical data to transmission engineers
  • Troubleshoot system integration issues during commissioning and operations
  • Review vendor submittals, shop drawings, and O&M documentation
  • Provide technical support during warranty claims and performance guarantee disputes

Key Skills & Expertise

  • Battery energy storage system architecture and design
  • LFP, NMC, and NaS battery chemistry fundamentals
  • Power conversion systems (PCS) — grid-forming and grid-following inverters
  • Battery Management Systems (BMS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS)
  • SCADA/HMI design and configuration
  • AC and DC electrical design — protection, grounding, arc flash
  • NFPA 855, UL 9540A, IEC 62619 standards
  • System performance modeling (Homer, PSCAD, PSSE, or similar)
  • Technical writing — design basis, FAT/SAT procedures, O&M manuals

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field; Master's preferred
  • 4+ years of experience in BESS, renewable energy, or power systems engineering
  • Hands-on experience with utility-scale battery storage systems (20 MW+ preferred)
  • Familiarity with IEEE 1547, IEEE 2030.2, and IEC 62933 standards
  • PE license preferred
  • Experience with major BESS OEMs (CATL, BYD, Fluence, Tesla, Wärtsilä, etc.)

Salary Range

$115,000 – $190,000

BESS Systems Engineers command premium compensation given the specialized skillset required. Expect $115,000–$190,000 base salary with bonuses, particularly at OEMs, IPPs, and engineering consultancies. Senior and principal-level engineers regularly exceed $200,000 total compensation.
