What Does a BESS Commissioning Engineer Do?

A BESS Commissioning Engineer is responsible for verifying that battery energy storage systems are installed, integrated, and operating in full compliance with design specifications, manufacturer requirements, and applicable standards before they are handed over for commercial operation. The role spans factory acceptance testing (FAT) at vendor facilities through site acceptance testing (SAT) and grid integration testing at the project site.

Commissioning Engineers work at the critical intersection of design intent and physical reality — they are the last line of defense before a project goes live. In the BESS space, this means testing battery strings, verifying BMS/PCS/EMS integration, confirming fire suppression and safety system operation, and demonstrating performance guarantees to the offtaker or utility.

The BESS commissioning market has grown dramatically as gigawatts of storage come online across the US. Experienced commissioning engineers are in extremely high demand, with many working across multiple simultaneous projects and traveling frequently.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute FAT procedures at battery pack and PCS manufacturer facilities
  • Develop and execute site acceptance test (SAT) and commissioning test procedures
  • Verify BMS, PCS, EMS/SCADA, and protection relay settings against design specifications
  • Conduct insulation resistance, continuity, and hi-pot testing on DC systems
  • Test fire suppression, smoke detection, and thermal runaway mitigation systems
  • Coordinate with utility engineers for grid interconnection and protection testing
  • Document all test results, deviations, and corrective actions in commissioning reports
  • Support punch list development and resolution during construction turnover
  • Train O&M personnel on system operation and emergency procedures
  • Provide technical support during initial operational period and warranty

Key Skills & Expertise

  • BESS commissioning — FAT, SAT, and integrated system testing
  • BMS and PCS configuration, parameterization, and testing
  • DC electrical systems — battery string testing, insulation resistance, arc flash
  • Protection relay testing (SEL, ABB, GE) and coordination studies
  • SCADA/HMI integration and alarm configuration testing
  • NFPA 855 and OSHA safety requirements for battery storage
  • Technical documentation — commissioning plans, test reports, punchlist management
  • Proficiency with Megger, Fluke, power quality analyzers, and commissioning software

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field
  • 3+ years of commissioning experience in BESS, solar, or substation environments
  • OSHA 30 certification required; NFPA 70E preferred
  • Experience with major BESS OEMs and PCS vendors
  • Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, protection coordination studies, and technical manuals
  • Willingness to travel up to 75%

Salary Range

$95,000 – $165,000

BESS Commissioning Engineers typically earn $95,000–$165,000 annually. Per diem, travel allowances, and project bonuses often add significant compensation above base salary. Contract/1099 rates range from $75–$150/hour.
