Battery Energy Storage in NYISO
The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the bulk power system for New York State, one of the most complex and congested grids in North America. New York has set among the most aggressive clean energy targets in the country β the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) mandates 70% renewable electricity by 2030 and 100% zero-emission electricity by 2040, with a 6,000 MW storage target by 2030.
New York's grid challenges are unique: a massive load center in New York City served by congested transmission corridors, significant behind-the-meter demand response resources, and a growing offshore wind pipeline in the Atlantic. Battery storage is central to New York's strategy β both for bulk transmission support upstate and for distribution-level relief in the five boroughs.
NYISO's Consolidated Edison territory in New York City is one of the most active C&I and utility-scale storage markets in the country, driven by Con Edison's storage programs and the high cost of peak demand in the city. The NY-Sun and VDER programs also support solar-plus-storage at scale.
